On Saturday, I spent my evening watching someone mix music by waving Wiimotes.
He calls himself DJ WiiJ, and he’s part of a larger group called — wait for it — Miyamoto. He waves around Wiimotes on stage in transition between tracks.
Miyamoto isn’t just the Wiimote waving mixer, either, but an entire stage show of Nintendo-related characters dancing to the beat. Luckily, I brought my camera along.
As some may have noticed, its been a while since I've updated anything on the site lately. I've been real busy working on something secret (has nothing to do with WiiJing) that will probably be big in its own right. So for the last quarter of the year I took a break from the site to work on that (or get sucked in).
But now that its a been a 1 year anniversary of DJWiiJ.com being online, I've decided to start updating things, posting news and getting back into the scene some more.
I'm still getting booked for gigs, my next one being at the Indie Gamers Party at GDC in San Francisco later this month, I'll have pics of that after it happens!
More gigs this year are on the way too, as well as another trip to SF's Bootie party!!!!
Look for more news and site changes as weeks come. Major news for the website itself on the way too, so stay tuned!
We here at DJWiiJ.com are proud to announce an upcoming contest in which one lucky person will walk away with a brand new Nintendo Wii is around the corner. We are still working out the details of the contest as well as other prizes to give away, so stayed tuned to DJWiiJ.com for more details. Some games will be bundled with the system too (still working on those details) as well as possible other prizes.
Details on how to win the Wii will be released in the future once we organize everything together. It looks like it will have something to do with our MySpace pages so you might want to swing by and add us as a friend... *just a hint*. You'll want to be sure to add BOTH DJWiiJ and the band Miyamoto as a friend in order for the best chances of winning. The contest is going to be used in conjunction with an upcoming DJWiiJ/Miyamoto tour.
Once we can tell you everything, we will!!! Until then stop by and check up on the status of the contest back here at DJWiiJ.com. More soon!!!!
When this happens, it will be announced much bigger than this...but for those that have been around the site lately, this is sort of a heads up for you, keep your eyes peeled.
A couple months ago I mentioned WiiJing being featured on G4, well I finally found a link to a clip of it, so stick around to the end of the video to watch Olivia Munn of Attack Of The Show! give WiiJing some major props!
WiiJ Articles In LA Times, LA Weekly and LA City Beat
Thanks to the upcoming show in LA at Bootie (see flyer in recent post), Wiijing, DJ ! and Miyamoto are being featured in some big press articles. Here are snippets from each article, click on the links to read the full article.
It\'s no surprise that the video game Jimmy Lesondak, also know as DJ ! (pronounced \"DJ Shift 1\"), plays most on his Nintendo Wii is Cooking Mama. After all, in the game, players use natural motions of the Wiimotes to create spicy virtual dishes. (Peel the potatoes by angling the controller down, chop the onions by vigorously shaking it up and down, and so on.)
Laptop mixmasters, eat your hard drives out. There’s a new technique in town, and it promises to get gamers and dance-floor geeks alike booted up and ready to boogie. Bootie L.A. presents DJ WiiJ from San Francisco; he’ll be “Wii-Jing” — hacking into Wiiemote controllers from the Nintendo Wii — to manipulate the sounds he chooses from a PC DJ program.
Lesondak, who started out with vinyl and has been DJing on the local bar circuit for nearly six years, now gets offers to perform in Quebec, San Francisco, and L.A., where he’ll be Saturday for a show at Safari Sam’s. He’s bringing his three-man band, Miyamoto, to play a few songs too. He’ll trigger tracks with Wii Remotes while friends Nick Yonan plays guitar and Todd Peichote plays keyboard and VJs.
A mashup DJ that goes by the name DJ ! (pronounced DJ Shift-1) has invented a new way to perform using wireless videogame controllers and a PC. By hacking into two Nintendo Wiimotes – a controller from Nintendo's new videogame system, the Wii – he is able to map controls on a PC DJing program that would allow him to DJ using the Wiimotes. He's calling the technological mashup "WiiJing" and says it will change the way DJing is performed in the future.
This new DJ style will have its LA premiere on stage at club Bootie in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 4 at Safari Sam's.
This groundbreaking set by DJ ! will be only the second live demonstation of WiiJing in action. (The debut performance was at Bootie SF in May.) DJ ! is the leader of the Turlock, California-based group The Silence Xperiment, the mashup team responsible for last year's infamous bootleg album, Q-Unit, which mashed up Queen vs. 50 Cent.
For the DJ WiiJ performance on August 4th, DJ ! will be showcasing his new band Miyamoto, where he will control all of the audio using six Wiimotes and two laptops, and will also feature appearances by Super Mario Brothers Mario and Luigi, on guitar and keyboard, playing live mashups, as well as live video mixing.
WiiJing Shown in Nintendo E3 Press Conference 2007????
I havn't seen it yet, so when I do I'll confirm it (and maybe post the clip), but its 100% apparent now, Nintendo knows about WiiJing... This is confirmed in the fact that their E3 Press Conference video earlier this morning.
According to Josh in the Forums, a short clip of WiiJ scratching is featured on their intro video before the conference. I'm not sure what this would mean, other than Nintendo knows about the site (including the head honchos since it made it in their BIG conference). This probably doesn't mean much right now, but who knows???

Hey Ice Hawk, I'm having the same connection issues. I'm under the belief that with my current bluetooth adaptor I will only be able to connect 1 Wiimote. Which, is not a problem, I just want to know how to load the controls into Traktor 3, I am unable to find the control file on this site.
Hi there.......I bought a BT device and hooked up my Wiimotes...one problem thoug, it connect's only to one Wiimote. the other one is in the list but won't connect. I've already discovered that the second Wiimote kas the same name as the first one. But my question is; how do you rename a second device? In my BT device program preferences I can't find anything about changin'device names. So if glovepie is started up, one Wiimote becomes actively connencted (green) and the other one does not respond at al.Can you help me out here? And another question, i read a comment about a traktor 3 Wii version? what's the story on that one....Hope you guys can help me out! Greetz from the Netherlands......
annoyingly i cannot set up my two wiimotes. my bluetooth connects one, finds them both but i can only connect one at a time. anyhelp? (just startin out, can you tell :D)

Hey Steven, we dont have alot of tech support so we've only been able to get the site to run good in some browsers, only a few browsers (or versions) seem to run the site slow..try installing the newest Firefox, see if that fixes things
